Recovering from Low Back Pain



Dear Stuart,
Thanks very much for your instruction and encouragement over the past few months. Having tried and failed with all the 'usual' forms of treatment to sort my lower back pain out i must admit that I was initially sceptical when I was first referred to you by Dan Plev. As it turns out that doubt was completely miss placed. I was originally referred to Stuart for a herniated disc. Part of my problem was that having had 2 children my core muscles had been weakened and had allowed the disc to slip out of place. Stuart developed a programme that would take my lifestyle into account as well as the fact that I was planning on becoming pregnant again about 6 months later. The exercises were very precise and targeted and my back definitely improved each time I went back for my ongoing assessments. Once I felt well enough, I became pregnant and Stuart adapted the exercises. I followed this pregnancy-tailored exercise programme throughout and also just after I had given birth. Considering it was my third baby and I had 2 toddlers at home, the pregnancy aches and pains were considerably less and I couldn't believe how quickly my body got back to normal. My core was so much tighter than the other 2 pregnancies and my recovery was much quicker. I still do a couple of the exercises now and I know that whilst I do, my back will be fine and my whole body will benefit.

Recovering from Spinal Stenosis



"I first went to see Nick Potter and John Bowskill in May 2000; I was 72. A scan a few weeks earlier had confirmed my GP’s suspicion that I had spinal stenosis and an L 4/5 problem. I had by then seen three specialists, one of whom wished to operate straight away and the others felt it was still a bit early to do so; but neither of them gave much help about how I could ease the pain. At that stage I was only able to walk about 150 yards without resting and I found it almost impossible to stand up for more than five minutes.

I saw Nick Potter on a regular basis during the first six months, but he had always stressed that it would be Jon and his exercises, which would cure me. Although I have been a ball game player all my life, I was certainly not an exercise buff; in fact if the truth be known I was rather averse to them, though I should add that my wife has always been something of a yoga/pilates fan and was very opposed to the idea of a surgical operation on a back. She had knew of people, who had cured really serious back problems through exercising their stomach muscles.

So there I was in Nick and Jon’s hands. Jon examined me for balance and straightness, etc. He then gave a number of exercises. Very boring and quite tiresome! But I knew that my best hope in curing myself lay in these exercises. Gradually, the pain began to ease. After about eight months I was fairly pain free, but the pain could come and go a bit. Jon increased the intensity of the exercise as the months went by. After about two and a half years I was able to get back onto the Real Tennis court, and at 79 I am still playing regularly once a week.

As I have mentioned Jon increases the intensity of my exercises about every six months. I know that, even after having done these exercises for over 7 years, my back is stronger today than it was last year. And yes, I still do these somewhat boring exercises three times a week as laid down by Jon: and our exercise ball has become very much part of our lives; sitting on it to watch TV and using our computers. I know my fitness depends on all this."

Recovering from Hip Pain



"I have been training with Stuart for the past 4 months. I have a one hour session each week with him and the rest of the week I train alone with a programme he has devised. I was prompted to seek help as I had been diagnosed with arthritis of the hip and was in considerable pain.

Stuart began by assessing my spine, shoulders, neck and hips joints. He then worked out a series of stretches to improve my posture. As I worked on these exercises, Stuart has gradually added more, designed to strengthen my inner core muscles, lose weight and support my hip. He checks my level of pain each week taking care to eliminate any exercise that put a strain on my back and hip, whilst continually extending my capabilities.

All my exercises have been presented to me in a folder clearly explaining their frequency and intensity with diagrams or photographs to ensure I maintain the correct posture. I have found these very useful when training alone.

Throughout this period of training I have lost over a stone and a half in weight, my posture has improved and my hip pain is now considerably reduced. My recovery time from any strenuous exercise is much quicker.
